The Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative (TAWI) was founded by school teacher Richard Norton in 2009. After retiring, Richard sold his house in Pretoria and with the proceeds, set up what was first known as the Port St Johns Animal Welfare – later becoming TAWI. Richard was determined ‘to fulfil his lifelong dream of helping the many suffering and diseased dogs in Port St Johns, where the closest vet is 100km away, chief volunteer Helen Miller tells us.
TAWI operates out of Bush Camp on the real Wild Coast, near Port St Johns. While offering a stunning landscape and unspoilt beaches – a haven for tourists who want to get away from it all, it is the most poverty stricken area in the very poor Eastern Cape. The people’s average life expectancy is 41, it has the lowest per capita income and unemployment runs at over 70 percent. As the human community struggles to survive, so do their animals.
Says Helen: “TAWI is not an actual shelter, rather we work proactively through outreach to provide treatments, sterilisations, advice and knowledge to families who otherwise would have no access to these services. We have found that this approach of ‘rescuing’ animals in their own homes is not only more cost and time-effective for TAWI, but is is the only sustainable option for generations to come in actually tackling companion animal welfare.”
How To Help
“Financial support (we always run out of funds before we run out of animals and families needing help), treatments (particularly dewormers and tick and flea treatments), exposure, increased awareness and veterinary skills – vets that would like to volunteer for a short working holiday and help with sterilisations are always needed. If you have veterinary skills and would enjoy a working holiday in this beautiful region, TAWI would love to hear from you,” says Helen.
