#CoronaVirusChallenge: Mzansi Responds To The First Case Of Coronavirus

While the infectious disease which started in Wuhan, China, has rattled stock markets and tourism industries around the world, Mzansi’s response to coronavirus was to take to Twitter, and the #CoronaVirusChallenge began to trend.

The country’s residents came together to share their ‘preparation’ to fight off coronavirus , with ‘innovative’ face masks and sage advice. It seems that nothing can get us down.


According to reports, coronavirus has infected 98,000 people around the world and killed over 3,300. The majority of cases (80,552) are in China where 3,042 patients having died.

Fighting the virus with humour.

While some might say the #CoronaVirusChallenge jokes are a little “too soon”, one of the country’s most famous comedic exports, Trevor Noah recently joked about the virus’s spread to Africa on the Daily Show:

“Am I the only one who noticed that the virus has gone everywhere, except Africa? Look, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want the virus but I am kind of hurt. Why is Africa always left out?” said Noah.

He joked that coronavirus was scared of coming to the continent. “It knows that if it shows up in Africa, Ebola will be waiting at the airport like ‘Oh, Corona! Look at me, Corona. I am the virus now.’”
