Nouwens Carpet Helping Kids For Xmas

Nouwens Carpets hosted its sixth annual Christmas party with a number of local Harrismith businesses gathering on November 25,  and handing over special Christmas packs to underprivileged children in the area – beneficiaries of the Maluti Child Care Project. Apart from each child enjoying a nutritious meal, they also received a toiletry package with a toothbrush, toothpaste, a small face cloth, stationery, colouring books and some delicious snacks, Leandri Bester, financial administrator at Nouwens said.

Bester said the Maluti Child Care Project was established in 2005 when Nouwens Carpets and other businesses in the Harrismith and Qwa Qwa surrounds ‘identified a need for the children in the community to be taken care of during the day’.

“Currently the project is run by Nouwens Carpets and 100 percent of all proceeds and donations are used to alleviate the plight of approximately 3 180 orphaned and vulnerable children from newborn to 15 years old. Each child that is a part of the project receives one nutritious meal per day five times a week. The meals are distributed via seven mobile feeding kitchens, which are run by a group of 29 volunteers. These helpers are involved in the preparation and distribution of the meals to the children on a day to day basis.”

Luci Nouwens, CEO and owner of Nouwens Carpets says, “We are so grateful to the generosity of all the sponsors and local businesses that make regular contributions to the project. The unfortunate reality is that the statistics of orphaned children are quite overwhelming and are continuing to increase every year. Therefore, the challenge that we face is to acquire more sponsors that will assist with the basic grocery products needed for the children that we, often take for granted. We especially focus on assisting child-headed households and vulnerable children who need sufficient food and nutrition to grow and stay healthy. Through additional training programs and support for children headed households we further assist in improving their quality of life by enabling them to become self-sufficient households in the future.”
