Actress Julianne Hough loves them, and personal trainer Kayla Itsines swears by them. But why? Let’s face it, burpees aren’t the most pleasant moves, but boy are they effective! We tell you why.
What Are Burpees?
Burpees have been described as a physical exercise consisting of a squat thrust made from and ending in a standing position. In short, they’re better then their name, which comes from their inventor, physician Royal H. Burpee. Invented in the 1930s as a quick tool for testing physical fitness, they were later popularised in World War II when the United States Army adopted it as part of the physical fitness assessment for new recruits.
According to fitness experts, burpees combine strength training and aerobic conditioning as few other bodyweight exercises ever could. life.spartan.com describes the classic burpee is a four-count movement consisting of four steps: 1. Begin in a standing position; 2. Move into a squat position with your hands on the ground (count 1); 3. Kick your feet back into a hand plank position, while keeping your arms extended (count 2); 4. Immediately return your feet into squat position (count 3); and 5. Stand up from the squat position (count 4)
