Jam of the Day: OneRepublic – No Vacancy

by El Broide

After releasing their experimental album ‘Oh My My’ back in October last year, OneRepublic are back with some new music today as the group release the tropical banger ‘No Vacancy’. The song was written and produced by the group’s lead single Ryan Tedder alongside Stargate and its quickly become one of my favourite tracks from the group.

‘No Vacancy’ is a reggae-inspired tropical pop track with a twist. While the production is fire, it’s the songwriting and vocal performance where the song shines. The group delivered beautifully written piece of pop music which sees Ryan perform in a high register – something he wowed us with on the group’s hit track ‘Wherever I Go’. His delivery is full of emotion and it’s something that really makes the song believable.

In a heartfelt letter on the group’s Facebook page, Ryan revealed that he had asked his label to put a stop to the promotion of their latest record ‘Oh My My’. Since the album was released just six months ago  – the new single was unexpected, but after a battle with anxiety, Ryan reveals he found inspiration and had to release it. “I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, not sleeping, on meds, not happy, anxiety on a crippling level and it was triggered from sheer exhaustion,” Ryan said in the lengthy post. “So, for the first time ever and hopefully the last, I asked our label (who is amazing) to stop. Stop the album, stop the promo, don’t release another song. Hit pause. And they did.”

So, what does this mean for the band going forward? “We will be dropping new music as often as humanly possible… monthly, weekly sometimes, and it will be VARIED and with collaborations and may feel bonkers at first,” he wrote in the post. “News flash: I am ADD AF and always have been. It is IMPOSSIBLE for me to stick to one lane or one style or sound, I am incapable of it and so are the rest of the guys. That’s part of my anxiety, ‘what this album supposed to sound like?!!’” We’re so glad Ryan is back and more inspired than ever. We are massive fans of OneRepublic and it’s because of songs like these!
