HAIR can sometimes pose a challenge. From the days where it just doesn’t want to cooperate and fall limp and lifeless to split ends and hair colour disasters, anything can happen! Luckily our Beauty Editor, Carli, has put together top tips for tresses so you can avoid a bad hair day every day.
- DON’T rinse hair with very hot water. It will damage the cuticle and can make hair dry and frizzy.
- RED hair can look dull a few weeks after it’s been coloured, so it’s a good idea to use a conditioning mask especially for red hair and a shine spray to boost the lustre of the hair. When using shine spray just lightly spray the mist above the head and let it fall onto your hair for a more natural shine effect.
- MOISTURISE your natural hair at least three times a week. Apply a leave-in conditioner before wrapping hair up, only then put on your wig. This will help the product to penetrate the hair for maximum moisture and assist in relieving itchiness. Be sure to choose a product that will not cause build-up. It is the build-up of product that results in your scalp not being able to breathe, and this is one of the causes of an itching head.
- LEMON juice really does work at lightening the hair. But the trick is to run lemon juice through the hair before conditioning, this way you’ll get really shiny, blonde locks.
- TAKING a daily protein supplement and multivitamin will help boost your hair’s growth cycle by nourishing the hair from the root. Combining external treatments with internal hair treatments, such as those rich in conditioning agents and Biotin, will condition the hair and scalp and promote strong healthy hair.
- USE a large radial (round) brush and dry hair in the opposite direction to which it naturally falls. This will give the maximum volume and fullness – it works every time!
- FOR easy, Bohemian inspired waves, tie hair into five large braids before going to bed. Take them out in the morning and you’ll have soft waves.
- BABY hairs at the front of a hairstyle can really ruin a look. To smooth hair down, apply a little clear mascara or brow gel over the strays.
- GET your blush brush from your make-up kit. Spritz some shine spray onto the ends of your hair, then buff it with the brush.
- Always use a heat protective product with ceramides to combat breakage and damage when flat ironing or curling hair.
- TO maintain a glam blowout days after you visit the salon, spritz dry shampoo onto the scalp, then brush through hair. (Don’t blow-dry or hair will look dirtier.)
- THE scalp’s natural oils condition, so apply conditioner three or four inches away from your scalp to avoid weighing down hair
- DID you know the salt from your sweat can actually dry out your hair? If you apply a treatment mask before your workout, the ingredients push moisture into your strands and seal it in before the salt has a chance to dry your hair out. The heat from your workout will allow the mask the work deeper, then all you have to do is rinse and go!
- IF you have long hair and don’t want to commit to a cut, pin sections underneath the neck to create a faux bob.
- IF you need shine and hold, take two walnut sized balls of mousse and add four drops of serum. Comb through hair.
- A bob with shorter ends in the back makes hair look full and dense. For a nice bend in front, run a drop of gel from roots to ends and tuck strands behind your ears when hair is still damp.
- A pin straight part can show roots, so mix things up and hide a missed salon visit. You can also try parting hair to the other side and any regrowth won’t be as noticeable. Or get a root concealer.
- IF you want a brighter complexion, add some highlights around the face and hairline. This will help to reflect light off the skin.
- DID you know that wearing a ponytail in the same place could cause hair loss? Switch the position with every wear to reduce tension and make sure to use good elastic bands.
- HONEY: the secret to glowing locks. To make your highlights shimmer add 1 tablespoon of honey to a dollop of your favourite conditioner.
