Jam of the Day: Miley Cyrus – Malibu

It’s hard to believe that it’s been close to four years since Miley Cyrus released her ‘Bangerz’ album. Since then, she has matured so much as an artist. She experimented within the hip-hop space as a featured artist and then released her arty, eclectic album ‘Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz’. Now, the pop star is back with a new sound as she readies her next era and today, the singer dropped ‘Malibu’, the lead single off the project.

The song is a mid-tempo love song which Miley has dedicated to her fiancé Liam Hemsworth. The track is definitely a new sound for Miley. The singer explores the indie pop genre more than ever before and it seems that the girl who shocked the world on ‘Bangerz’ has done a lot of growing up. I love the subtle rock elements the song has. It’s an authentic love song and you can tell the star is singing from her heart. While the song is weak lyrically, the new sound works for Miley. I’ve always said she has one of the strongest vocals in the music industry and over the past few years, she has proved she can tackle any genre – and ‘Malibu’ solidifies that.

Miley dropped a breezy video to accompany the song and it fits the sound perfectly. The video brings the new era full circle. Miley’s got a new sound, a new look and a new outlook on life and while the ‘Bangerz’ girl is still within her, she’s keeping her tucked away this time around. In fact, there are reportedly songs about Hillary Clinton and women in the workplace on this album. “This record is a reflection of the fact that yes, I don’t give a fuck, but right now is not a time to not give a fuck about people,” Cyrus said. “I’m giving the world a hug and saying, ‘Hey, look. We’re good – I love you.’ And I hope you can say you love me back.” I’m quite excited about this new era. ‘Malibu’ isn’t a mind-blowing single but it’s something new and refreshing from the singer.
