The game of Survivor continues to prove that alliances and loyalty are something that’s should rarely made you feel safe. In fact, getting too comfortable is the biggest mistake you can make. Paul Smulders found this out the hard way on this week’s shocking episode of Survivor South Africa: Island of Secrets.
Despite sharing his Hidden Immunity Clue with his tribe mates last week and giving Rob the Immunity Idol to save him from leaving the Tribe, Paul got the boot this week after Sa’ula found themselves heading back to tribal council for the second week in a row. To make matters worse, Paul was eliminated despite last week’s target Seipei still being around and an injured Nathan who was struggling with an injury that he said caused “excruciating pain”.
Paul’s big mistake was made in a conversation, which squandered the trust of besties Steffi and Nicole. He had earlier canvassed each of them separately to approach the other with a view to a “tight-three” alliance, but when they were together and Steffi and Nicole brought it up, Paul seemed to backtrack, thereby sealing his own fate.
“I was so shocked. I didn’t see it coming. I always tried to play the game smart. When I went to the island of secrets I didn’t know what was going on in my tribe so I had to use the clue to gain trust. I was also thinking about the future with every move I made,” Paul said in an interview after his elimination. “It was an opportunity of a lifetime. I was cold and wet, but I would do it all again.”
Survivor South Africa: Island of Secrets continues on Thursday at 19h00 on M-Net.
