Sha-sha! Cassper Nyovest memes go viral after Tito Mboweni’s new ‘promotion’

It was a busy week in South African politics , but nobody would have expected that rapper Cassper Nyovest would be the biggest benefactor of the week’s events.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced to the country that he had accepted Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s resignation and proceeded to swear in Tito Mboweni as Nene’s replacement.

While some people remember Tito as a former Minister of Labour and a two-term governor of the reserve bank, many people remember him for a different reason. In 2017, Cassper Nyovest released a single titled Tito Mboweni and it went on to become one of the biggest songs of the year (it’s still a club banger at the time of writing!).

So when President Ramaphosa named Tito Mboweni as the new Minister of Finance, the Twitter streets were more than ready with responses.

The political analysts took a deeper look at Tito’s credentials, while the Tsibipians (Cassper’s fans) celebrated what has inadvertently become another feather in the rapper’s cap.

Fikile Mbalula was one of the first to congratulate Cassper Nyovest on the unexpected attention he was receiving, adding that the rapper’s sales would receive a boost as a result:

The South African rand seemed to perform extremely well following the announcement, as its value against the US dollar increased.

Maps Maponyane used the famous Cassper Nyovest song to weigh in on the latest ministerial change:

Other celebrities couldn’t help but quote the song a few times:

The eNCA news team, which is normally very serious-faced, participated in the joking:

Cassper Nyovest joined in on the fun a day later, when he shared:
