We recently caught up with one of the first ever hosts of Yo MTV Raps Africa, Scoop, to chat about being part of the historic Hip Hop show and hosting with Nadia Nakai.
On Being Approached To Host Yo MTV Raps
Scoop shares his initial reaction when MTV Base approached him to come to host Yo MTV Raps. “It was excitement man! I’ve been in the game for twelve years now and MTV is one of the channels that I haven’t worked with, in South Africa. Just to be able to work with such an international and reputable brand was exciting.” He said.
“So many times you get offered jobs/gigs that are not in line with who you are and it so hard to say no to that kind of money, but when MTV comes and says that they’ve got a Hip Hop show for you – mind you one of my biggest idols is Fab 5, Freddy, and he was the first host of Yo MTV raps in the states, a couple years late here I am being the Fab 5 Freddy of Africa.”
On Hosting With Nadia
When asked about working with Nadia Nakai, Scoop has nothing but praise for the female rapper. “It was amazing! Nadia is an ultimate professional; I can tell how she’s been able to not release an album for four years but still at the top of people’s minds.” According to Scoop, Nadia never had any problems with staying longer, even if it meant sleeping there.
“She takes everything that she does very seriously. She never had any problems with staying longer and working – she even brought a mattress where she could sleep on set, shout out to her. I appreciate the energy that we had,” he concluded.
