We caught up with women’s cricketer Laura Wolvaardt to get to know a bit more about what makes the opening batter tick, and to find out what she’s been up to during lockdown.
Q. What do you love most about cricket?
The thing that I love the most about cricket is definitely batting. It’s really my favourite thing to do and it has been since I was a little kid. So being able to bat every day is really amazing.
Q. What is your greatest highlight of your cricket career so far?
The greatest highlight of my cricket career so far was definitely this past World Cup that we just went to. I think as a team, we played some really great cricket, and we had a lot of memorable moments on the field. The standard of the tournament was high. There were 87 000 people at the final. it was just an incredible experience, and an incredible cricketing tournament to be a part of.
Q. What is your favourite experience while being on tour with the Proteas Women?
My favourite experience was definitely being in the West Indies with the team. The West Indies is an amazing place to tour. Being on tour there is a really nice experience and we made a lot of memories off the field and spent a lot of good time together.
Q. Who is your favourite cricket player at the moment and why? Man or Women.
In the men’s game my favourite player is Virat Kohli (from India). I love watching him bat. The passion he plays the game with is really amazing. I actually met him recently on our tour to New Zealand. He was really friendly and posed in a picture with me. I got to meet one of my favourite players which is really cool. In the women’s game my favourite player is Meg Lanning from Australia. She is really really consistent and I strive to be as consistent as she is one day.
Q. How are you spending your free time during the coronavirus lockdown?
During this coronavirus lockdown I am spending my free time studying. I am busy doing a BSC in Life Sciences through UNISA so I do study quite a bit. We still have exams coming up at the end of May – none of that has really changed. So assignments, studying, and then obviously training a bit where I can.
Q. What are your favourite movies of all time?
Titanic and A Star Is Born. I like the sad, emotional movies.
Q. Who is your favourite band/musician?
My favourite band or musician is easily Justin Bieber. He has been my favourite since forever.
Q. Do you like to cook? What is your favourite food?
I don’t like to cook. I can’t really cook much. My favourite food is sushi.
Q. What are your goals for the year ahead?
With regards to my goals for the year ahead, I’m not too sure what’s going to happen or how much cricket that we’ll play. I will prepare as well as I can for the ODI Women’s Cricket World Cup, happening next year in January in New Zealand. Academic-wise, my goal is to finish my year at university.
