Outspoken and controversial activist and author of Bare: The Blesser’s Game, I Tweet What I Like and BARE: The Hockey Club, Jackie Phamotse has been nominated at the SA Book Awards for best Adult Fiction after being shortlisted by Nelson BookScan South Africa as one of the top 10 best-selling authors in the country.
A few days ago, the star took to Instagram to voice her excitement about the nomination. “What an honour!” She wrote. “Thank you so much for the nomination; it’s been a long journey. Bare: The Blesser’s Game has truly been the highlight of my career as an author and social activist.” More recently, Phamotse chatted to us about being self-published and the reason behind opting for that route.
“All of my books are self-published,” she explained. “This was my only option because after I released the manuscript, no publishing house in South Africa wanted to deal with it.” Jackie was told that her book didn’t have a market here in SA. “They just said that my book would never sell in South Africa, there’s no market and it’s too graphic. I got four rejection letters and after the fourth one I was like no, I’m just tired.”
BARE: The Blesser’s Game has already won an award in Nigeria at the African Literary Icon Awards.
The SA Book Awards will be presented at this year’s annual PASA/SABA Conference as part of the Sefika Awards Dinner. The Conference will be held at Vineyard Hotel, Newlands, Cape Town on August 27, 2019.
