Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi is celebrating his 27th birthday today. Making it extra special, he is also captaining the Springboks for the 2nd time against England. Let’s celebrate our Captain and get behind him and the Bokke as they look to put the series out of England’s reach at 17h00. To celebrate Kolisi’s birthday we take a look at some fun facts about the man.
Siya Kolisi made history last week by becoming the first black man to captain the Springboks in an international rugby test match when the Springboks took on England.
Siya Kolisi grew up in the impoverished Zwide township just outside Port Elizabeth. He had a tough upbringing.
At the tender age of 12, Kolisi impressed scouts at a youth tournament in Mossel Bay and was offered a scholarship at Grey Junior in Port Elizabeth. He subsequently went to Grey High School where he played for the first XV rugby team.
Siya Kolisi made his senior debut for the Western Province team against the Golden Lions during the 2011 Vodacom Cup.
Kolisi made his debut for the Stormers during 2012 Super Rugby season. He made an immediate impact with 16 appearances scoring 1 try. Kolisi has played for the Stormers on 103 occasions to date.
Kolisi made his Springbok debut on 15 June 2013 against Scotland at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. He replaced the injured Arno Botha in the 5th minute of the game and was named as Man of the Match as the Springboks beat Scotland 30–17. Kolisi has represented the Springboks on the field 29 times to date.
Siya Kolisi is married to Rachel Kolisi. They have 2 kids.
Before becoming an international rugby player, Siya Kolisi dreamt of becoming a junior school teacher.He credits himself with being really good and patient with children. He says the ability to build a young mind through knowledge is an important one.
Siya Kolisi couldn’t drive when Audi chose him as their brand ambassador in 2013. But they were patient enough and paid for Siya to get his driver’s license.
Siya Kolisi is a die-hard fashionista. “I don’t have one favourite style in particular. You’re likely to find me in anything from a hip-hop-inspired look to a relaxed semi-casual look or a fitted suit.”
