He’s a professional rugby player with a big heart and big dreams! We recently caught up with the sportsman to know him more.
You recently got married – how is married life treating you?
It has truly been the best time of my life. I have learned so much about myself, as well as our relationship over the last couple of months. It’s an amazing feeling being able to share your life with another person.
What do you want to be remembered for in the rugby industry one day?
I would like to be remembered as the guy that never gave up on his dreams. I would like to be an inspiration to young kids by telling them my story.
Besides rugby, what other hobbies do you enjoy?
I love golf and fishing. I spend most of my time doing one or the other. It is very relaxing and takes my mind away from rugby for a while.
Who is one teammate that you look up to and draw inspiration from, and why?
Boeboes (Andries) Coetzee is the one player in my team I look up to. We went to the same High School and he has always been the hardest worker in the room. Even with all his success he is still very humble and an all-round great guy.
Bucket list travel destination and why?
Las Vegas, everything always looks bigger and better in Vegas. I enjoy a busy lifestyle and believe Vegas offers just that.
Who has played an important part in your career thus far and why?
There have been so many people that have played a massive role in my career, and believe it would be unfair to name only one. The family would probably be at the top of the list though.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you have given to yourself 10 years ago?
To learn from the people that have made it before you. There is a reason that they are where they are and you can always take some advice from each one of them.
How does one remain humble and grounded in an industry that is so publicised?
At the beginning of your career, it is more difficult because of all the attention people give you, but after time you soon realise that it can be a major distraction and you can lose focus of what got you there in the first place. You learn to deal with it and focus on your priorities, thereafter all the outside distraction don’t matter anymore.
What don’t people know about Dillon Smit?
I love animals and have probably had every pet possible. My current favourites are my two dogs and my African Grey.
