JEN: Hi Akhona! Tell me more about your most recent exciting new collaboration.

AKHONA: Hi Jen! I’ve just recently partnered with SuperDry, where I’ll be modeling for a new campaign entitled ‘Akhona Uncovered’.  Last year, I was honoured to work with Diesel in their influencer campaign, which could help change negative society stereotypes into a positive thing.  Nicki Minaj was one of their influencers from the US campaign.

JEN: Congratulations! Now I hear it wasn’t all red carpets, in your early childhood.

AKHONA: (Laughs) I was born in Umtata, a rural town in the former Transkei (Eastern Cape).  My farm town roots were challenging, but I kept pursuing my dream to reach new frontiers.  Eventually, after many years of hard work developing my fashion blogs Alistersvogue and NotedFashion, which won the award for Best Fashion Blog at the Sylbna Lifestyle Awards in Johannesburg. I’m honoured these days to be able to sit front row at Fashion Week, rub shoulders with SA’s top designers, and anchor the entertainment news every Friday on UCR FM in Umtata and Sajonisi Youth Radio.  In addition to my red carpet journey, I hope to give back to the community, by speaking at rural schools on personal branding and achieving goals.

JEN: What recent fashion show or shows, stood out for you, and why?

AKHONA: I really loved the recent Hospice Wits Fashion Show, which is an annual gathering of SA’s top A-Listers on one of the largest catwalks ever, in the name of charity.  It was a beautiful fusion of fashion leaders, influencers, personalities, and my favourites were seeing blogger Sarah Langa modelling for Gert-Johan Coetzee and a stunning performance by Lira. I also loved The Shows – Maxhosa by Laduma, which was a gorgeous fusion of fashion and opulence.

JEN: What are some of your upcoming projects?

AKHONA: I’ve branched into travel reporting, partnering with hotel groups The Capital Hotels & Apartments and styling with Puma. I hope through my platform, that I will be able to continue giving back to the community, particularly my rural home town.
