21st Century Group To Sue Over Taraji Debacle
In a statement released this morning, 21st Century Group – as organisers of the now somewhat infamous Women In Media Conference – have confirmed that they had contracted with a US-based booking agency, and allege bad faith on the part of the latter, saying they will now take legal action over the mess.
42 West reportedly then confirmed Henson’s availability to participate in the event and a MOU [Memorandum Of Understanding] was subsequently jointly signed between 21st Century Group and 42 West on the 3rd of August 2018. The MOU stipulated the terms and conditions of the booking, including Ms. Henson’s booking fee. A deposit was duly paid to 42 West and the marketing of Ms Henson’s participation at the International Women in Media Conference commenced.
“Following Ms Henson’s startling social media postings denouncing her participation in the event, as 21st Century Group, we instructed our lawyers to investigate the matter immediately, and unfortunately it has come to light that 42 West and Superstar Agency have not acted in good faith and we are of the opinion that Ms. Henson, through her management, was never booked for this event, though we signed an MOU and paid the required deposit to 42 West as the booking agency purporting to represent Ms. Henson. A contract had also been sent through to 42 West for signatures of all parties involved.
We have instructed our lawyers to take legal action against Superstar Agency and 42 West to recover monies paid over and to further sue for reputational damage that this unfortunate saga has had on our event and the associated brands that are aligned to it.”
The organisers then say, “We are committed to clearing our name, which has been unnecessarily tarnished by this unfortunate incident.21st Century Group will be defending any counter legal action taken against it by Superstar Agency and /or 42 West.”
The company asserts that their focus moving forward will be towards ‘staging a successful and dynamic conference. The inaugural International Women In Media Conference is set to be a vibrant event that will see media practitioners from all facets of the industry sharing knowledge and critical insights with attendees’.
The conference will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre on the 5th and 6th September 2018.
