Tracee Ellis Ross was overjoyed to use her own hair products at the gym for the first time.

The Black-ish star launched her debut haircare line Pattern, which was designed specifically for Afro-textured hair, back in September, and was blown away when she grabbed her travel-size three-ounce bottles of shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner after her workout.

“Today was the first day I brought my travel-size (bottles of Pattern) to the gym to wash my hair,” Tracee told Allure magazine. “I sat them in the shower at the gym and was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is crazy. Those are my products in the shower at the gym. This is bananas.’

“That’s the stuff that dreams are made of. But it’s not a dream anymore – it’s reality!”

The 47-year-old was prompted to create the line after years of struggling to find affordable haircare options for her curls, and her debut range includes a shampoo, three different kinds of conditioner, two hair oil serums, a brush and a microfibre towel.

Despite working on the idea of Pattern for many years, she revealed that she was driven to tears during a meeting with a potential investor who asked her: “Why do you think you, as an actress, can develop a hair-care line?”

However, the brutal interrogation didn’t sway her determination, and she set out to change the lack of representation in the haircare industry for women with Afro-textured hair.

“It was a long journey to get this to happen – one that required a lot of patience, and persistence, and perseverance, and keeping my eye on the prize,” Tracee shared.
