Time constraints are the biggest challenge for The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselcostume designer Donna Zakowska.
The hit Amazon prime show stars Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a housewife in the 1950s who decides to become a stand-up comic.
As well as the acting and storylines winning both praise and awards, including multiple Emmys and Golden Globes, the fashions seen onscreen have been a big hit with viewers, but Donna admits it’s sometimes hard going for the costume department.
“Everything’s a challenge, because we have so little time and so much of it is custom-built,” she said to Variety. “The challenge is really being able to keep up the standard of custom clothing in the time we’re in. Time is always of the essence for us.”
She also has to consider how the clothes will change as Midge evolves.
“It’s about the acceptance of her professional commitment, still in struggle with her personal life. She has momentum, so the clothes have to have the momentum of a person who’s made a clear decision,” the designer explained.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel returns for a third season later this year.
Talking about the show’s costumes in a chat with Town & Country ahead of season’s two release in December, Rachel confessed it was a tough task to select her favourite look.
“So impossible to choose,” the 28-year-old exclaimed. “We have so many incredible costumes. Our costume designer Donna Zakowska has continued to outdo herself in this season. She really has.”
