Stylist Karla Welch has learned a lot from her long-time partnership with Justin Bieber.
The fashion expert, who has been the What Do You Mean? hitmaker’s go-to stylist since 2011, opened up about her relationship with the popstar in an interview with The New Yorker.
“I always say that Justin was the best teacher I had,” Karla gushed, before calling him “full Hunter S. Thompson,” a reference to the unconventional style the singer shares with the late author.
The fashion guru continued to suggest that Justin’s penchant for unusual styles pushed her to explore new territory and challenged her creativity, especially when he used to ask her to find leopard print sweats, fashion pants from “fabrics that didn’t exist,” and to alter his Adidas sneakers so they were more to his liking.
While Karla admitted to being initially sceptical by Justin’s direction, she highlighted his tremendous influence within the fashion industry.
“Six months later, that’s what flooded the men’s market,” she noted.
Karla later teamed up with the Sorry star for her eponymous brand xkarla, and created a line of extra-long T-shirts, in collaboration with Hanes, inspired by the ones Justin wore on his Believe Tour.
The stylist went on to employ the 25-year-old as the face of the collection, and credits him as her muse for the set.
“Justin was fearless and fun and we went crazy. People HATED it, until they LOVED it,” she explained on her website. “These shirts are… inspired by Justin.”
