Steve Carell used to worry Kelly Clarkson would be “mad” at him over his The 40-Year-Old Virgin shout-out.
In 2005 movie, the actor’s character Andy Stitzer yells out the singer’s name in a scene in which he is getting his chest hair waxed off. The moment has become a popular Internet meme, and now Steve has confessed that he was pretty nervous to meet Kelly at the 2018 Golden Globes in January because he feared how she would react.
“My wife (Nancy) said, ‘There she is!’ And we had to go over and we kind of accosted her and I said, ‘Hi, we’ve never met but I really wanted to introduce myself.’ She could not have been nicer,” he recalled during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night (15Nov18). “I thought she’d be mad about me about (The 40-Year-Old Virgin). I wasn’t sure because I’d never met her over those years. (I didn’t know if Kelly was) like, ‘Is he making fun of me? Why would he say that in anguish?'”
However, Steve insisted that Kelly was tickled by the shout-out and that he is a “big fan” of the Since U Been Gone hitmaker.
“She is awesome, she’s the best,” the 56-year-old noted.
During the interview, Steve also spoke about his new movie, Welcome to Marwen, which is inspired by Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 documentary Marwencol.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the new film follows Mark Hogancamp, a victim of a violent assault, as he constructs a miniature World War II village in his yard to help in his recovery.
“He puts himself in there as an alter ego and he is able to kind of work through a lot of his own trauma while taking pictures. It’s a really fascinating story. He’s a really lovely, lovely guy,” he added.
Welcome to Marwen opens in the U.S. on 21 December and other cinemas around the world in early January.
