Serena Williams thanks ‘great friend’ Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, for support during Wimbledon

Serena Williams thanked her “great friend” Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, for her overwhelming support during Wimbledon.

The tennis ace was defeated in the women’s singles final by Romania’s Simona Halep on Saturday, and the mother-of-one was grateful for Meghan attending her matches during the championship.

Serena told reporters at her post-match press conference that having the the support and friendship of the duchess “is great,” and added: “She’s such a great friend and a great person as well. And always positive, no matter what.”

“It’s so good to have people like that, just to know… (she’s) such a fan of the sport,” the 37-year-old shared. “She too is happy for Simona. She saw that she played unbelievably, and that’s just the kind of person that she is.”

Meghan attended the match on Saturday alongside sister-in-law Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and the royal duo were joined by Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton.

Kate suited the Wimbledon colours perfectly in a dark green Dolce & Gabbana dress, while new mum Meghan opted for a pleated Hugo Boss skirt paired with a white shirt.

Meghan previously supported Serena at her Wimbledon match against 18-year-old Kaja Juvan earlier this month, and sat in the stands alongside close friends Lindsay Roth and Genevieve Hillis.

“Yes, I knew she was there. It’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis so I was happy,” Serena said at the time.
