Rachel Brosnahan suffered wearing tiny vintage shoes for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The two-time Golden Globe winner plays aspiring stand-up comedian Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel in Amazon’s hit comedy series, but Rachel’s dedication to her role as the 1950s New York housewife is causing her some serious pain.
The vintage heels she has to wear, painstakingly sourced by costume designer Donna Zakowska, barely fit and she has to go up a size and a half in the narrow shoes.
“I never wear heels in my real life and playing a woman who wears them all day long every day was difficult,” the 28-year-old told Footwear News. “Honestly, I was waiting for the Buzzfeed article of all these GIFs (of me) trying and failing to walk in heels. It never came.”
Donna explained that she had found more than 200 pairs of shoes for Rachel and co-star Marin Hinkle, who plays her mother in the show, to wear in the first season, but it was a “constant journey” to find ones that fit.
“The shoes are a mini-nightmare,” she sighed. “We had about 200 shoes for Rachel (in season one), and probably about 12 fit. We looked everywhere for her size. Looking for shoes is a constant journey; 90 per cent are vintage. Rachel’s a trooper. It wasn’t a period of platforms. The ’50s offered a much more delicate shoe. Women spent entire days in the shoes.”
However, Rachel is in awe of the attention to detail the show’s costume department puts into each of her outfits, and confessed she feels herself transforming into Midge as soon as she puts on the clothes.
“The costumes change the way that I carry myself. It changes the way I stand, the way I walk, the way I breathe, which I’ve learned as we’ve gone on has become a very integral part of this character. It influenced the way that I speak, and Midge is all about using her voice!” the actress smiled.
