British royal Prince Harry used to help Jimmy Choo carry his shoe samples when the footwear designer would visit his mother Princess Diana.
The late royal was a keen follower of style, and was lauded throughout her lifetime for her bold, fashion forward wardrobe choices. And it seems as a boy Diana’s youngest Harry, now 31, was always on hand to help.
Jimmy’s niece, Lucy Choi, who launched her namesake shoe line four years ago, recalls how her uncle helped her get ahead in the industry.
“I would come down from university and help my uncle with the shows, so I got to meet people like Kylie Minogue, who loved his shoes, and Naomi Campbell, who was doing the catwalk,” she smiled to Britain’s Hello! magazine. “He worked with designers like Jasper Conran, Tomasz Starzewski and Catherine Walker, the huge names of the day – it was terribly glamorous and exciting.
“Of course, my uncle would visit Princess Diana at Kensington Palace, where, apparently, Prince Harry world help carry his heavy suitcase full of samples to the car.”
Jimmy’s other niece, Lucy’s sister, Sandra works as the creative director of Jimmy Choo, but Lucy chose to follow her own path into fashion. After working as a financial analyst she went on to develop the business side of shoe brand French Sole, before starting her own label.
The Lucy Choi London label has already become a firm favourite with British celebrities, including popstar Cheryl, who is currently dating One Direction star Liam Payne.
“I always get so excited when I see someone famous wearing our shoes. I have to pinch myself,” Lucy beamed. “I remember the first time I saw a photo of Cheryl wearing our shoes when she was on The X Factor. I thought, ‘Wow! This is a woman who is loved by the nation and she’s chosen my shoes’.”
