Lupita Nyong’o’s beauty look for the 2019 Met Gala was influenced by drag queens.
The Oscar-winning actress stepped out at the annual event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City earlier this month, and fully embraced the theme – Camp: Notes on Fashion.
Sporting a glittering gown with rainbow-coloured feather detailing from Versace, Lupita looked to her go-to make-up artist Nick Barose for her beauty look, and he has now shared that they took inspiration from late drag queen Divine, who appeared in several of John Waters’ films.
“I actually promised Lupita that I would put her in (drag) for Halloween and we never actually got around to do it,” he told Allure, adding that the key to the transformation was changing the shape of her eyebrows using non-toxic glue and setting powder. “Divine always did the eyebrow in different ways. Sometimes it’s just straight up, at an angle, or other times, like we did (for the Met Gala), it’s more angular, like it goes up and wings out.”
Nick went on to explain that Divine probably looked to Hollywood film icons like Marlene Dietrich and Jean Harlow when deciding on a brow shape.
In addition, he noted that he used metallic glitter in bronze and gunmetal grey colours to really make the actress’ eyes pop.
“I make a point of pulling back on the colour when I go so strong with the shapes and the glitter. So basically, on the eye, it’s more like brown and bronzey-brown, gold, and black,” the expert commented.
To top off her look, Nick used Lancome’s Lip Pencil in Aubergine and then applied a slick of the French beauty brand’s L’Absolu Lacquer Gloss in Not Afraid.
