Lana Del Rey is using lemon juice to lighten her hair until she can make an appointment with her colourist.
The Video Games singer is known for her eclectic sense of style and long auburn locks. However, Lana’s natural hair colour is actually a blonde shade, and in a new Instagram post, she revealed that she was embracing her roots while staying at home amid the coronavirus lockdown.
“When you have no choice but to go back to being a blonde because Kevin, Tracey and Jacob are gone and there’s nothing but lemons left to cover your roots for nine weeks (sic),” the 34-year-old wrote alongside a mirror selfie focused on her hair, with the caption most likely referring to celebrity colourist Tracey Cunningham and her team at the Meche Salon in Los Angeles.
Lemon juice is a natural bleach that will whiten light blonde or light brown hair. Yet, the technique is unlikely to work on brunettes – and may actually cause dark strands to turn orange.
But in spite of the risks, Lana appears to be happy with her new colour, with her post quickly racking up 1.5 million likes and thousands of comments from her followers.
“Love it!!!!!!!!” wrote Tracey, while actress Mena Suvari pointed out the similarities between the star and the image of two cherubs on her phone cover. “I see you’ve captured your real self in this photo: the beautiful little angel cherub being kissed.”
Over the years, Lana has experimented with all sorts of hair colours, including strawberry blonde and chestnut. But in an interview with Maxim magazine in 2014, she admitted that she felt more confident with auburn strands.
“When I went darker with my hair, I don’t know why, but people took my music more seriously,” she conceded.
