Pregnant Katy Perry was planning to pay homage to Madonna’s iconic cone bra with her look for the 2020 Met Gala.
The world of fashion and celebrity unite every year for the glamorous red carpet event, which takes place on the first Monday in May at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, however, the this year’s edition, which revolved around the About Time: Fashion and Duration theme, has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Stars usually spend months planning their showstopping outfits, and the Roar singer, who is a Met Gala regular, revealed on Instagram on Monday night that she was going to make a big fashion statement that involved her bump.
The 35-year-old, who is expecting her first child with fiance Orlando Bloom, gave fans an inside look at part of her ensemble hanging on a mannequin, revealing that she was going to wear a blush pink ribbed cone bra with matching bump cover.
“What would have been… #TheMetBall2020,” she wrote in the caption, adding a heartbroken emoji.
The outfit was a clear reference to the gold corset with cone bra that Jean Paul Gaultier created for Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour in 1990. Katy didn’t confirm if the French designer made her Met Gala look too.
In a recent video interview with Access, she teased her outfit by saying, “I was gonna definitely show off the bump, for sure, but we’ll just be home!”
The popstar wasn’t the only one who took to social media to mark the occasion. Many celebrities looked back at some of their favourite Met Gala looks, while Julia Roberts donned a stunning black and white tiered tulle gown as she posed in front of a window for a snap on her Instagram page.
In the caption, she wrote: “Here’s me…not going to the Met Ball tonight. #stayhome #yesyoustillhavetostayhome.”
