John Boyega has directed a new campaign film for Jo Malone London.
The Star Wars actor became the first male brand ambassador for the fragrance brand earlier this year, joining the likes of models Karen Elson and Poppy Delevingne.
Now, Boyega has taken on an even bigger role for Jo Malone London, and helmed the short film A London Gent, which was shot in and around Peckham, where he grew up. The clip highlights his background, family and his friends, and even features scenes in his new house, which is appropriately filled with Jo Malone London candles.
“There’s a mixture of things you see me do in the film, you see me in a professional environment on a film set, then with family and it’s about breaking free of the concept of ‘going back or returning to your roots’ but more about the roots existing with this new side of my life. It’s not a chapter that stops,” he explained in an interview with WWD.
Boyega also noted that he’s been big on candles for the past few years.
“You know how when you go into your room that you’ve just cleaned, and you put a candle in the corner? It’s that feeling, and the aesthetic of them as well that I really like,” the star shared.
Elsewhere in the chat, the 27-year-old also revealed that he began collecting different ouds – a type of wood used in incense and perfume – when he was filming Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
“You know you’re getting older when the first thing you want to do is smell like your dad, and then I started travelling and started collecting different ouds. We also filmed Star Wars in Jordan, and they are big on ouds there,” he added.
