Jessica Simpson decided to branch out into fashion after fans began copying the outfits she wore on her reality TV show.
The I Wanna Love You Forever singer first teamed with shoe designer Vince Camuto on The Jessica Simpson Collection back in 2006, but the line proved to be so successful that she quickly expanded into clothing, jewellery, and fragrances.
But in one chapter in Jessica’s new memoir Open Book, she recalled how the company actually came about after her mother Tina noticed people loved the looks she sported on Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica between 2003 and 2005, which she appeared on alongside then-husband Nick Lachey.
“She always styled me when I started out, and during Newlyweds, people would contact her to give me clothes to wear/ Mom noticed that what I wore on the show would then sell out in stores,” the 39-year-old wrote. “Since everyone was always asking my mom what I was wearing, she wanted to cut out the middleman. She told my dad to find someone willing to do a licensing deal, so we could just make the clothes ourselves.”
The Jessica Simpson Collection is now carried in hundreds of stores across the U.S., with it previously reported by editors at Forbes at the brand garners $1 billion in sales each year.
And Simpson is pleased she stuck to her guns and protected herself when she first entered into negotiations with Camuto and his team.
“The point is you take care of yourself, even when you are given an amazing opportunity,” she added.
