Jennifer Lopez cried as she left for 2019 Met Gala in Versace tailor’s final design

Jennifer Lopez was in tears as she left for the 2019 Met Gala because she wanted to honour late Versace tailor Luigi Massi with her ensemble.

The superstar attended the annual fundraising event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City on Monday night, with the theme revolving around the new exhibit, Camp: Notes on Fashion, based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp.

Jennifer opted for an opalescent dress and beaded headpiece from Versace, and in a behind-the-scenes video uploaded to her YouTube channel the following day, the footage showed her tearing up while remembering Luigi, who passed away at the age of 56 last month after suffering a heart attack.

After wiping away the tears with a tissue, Jennifer took a moment to compose herself before leaving for the bash with her fiance Alex Rodriguez.

Earlier in the video, the On the Floor singer also explained that she was dedicating her look to the fashion guru, who she had worked with many times over the course of her career.

“Obviously, we’re saddened this year and cried during our first fitting, putting on this gown,” she shared. “Knowing that Luigi was making this gown when he passed away. It’s difficult, but at the same time it’s also a celebration of his work.”

Elsewhere, Jennifer gave fans a detailed look at her stunning dress, and was also filmed demonstrating to the Versace team of tailors exactly how she wanted the number altered.

As well as asking for the slit to be higher, she requested the back be cinched in.

“I’ll tell you one thing, Luigi would have made this waist much smaller for me. He would make sure (I looked) very skinny. But don’t squeeze the back… somehow, he wouldn’t squeeze the back,” the 49-year-old said.

In addition, Jennifer asked for the fringe on her headpiece to be shortened as she wanted to show off more of the detailing on the back of her gown, and commented that it should look like a “beautiful swim cap”.

Other celebrities to wear Versace creations to the 2019 Met Gala included Serena Williams, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Dua Lipa, Henry Golding, and Lupita Nyong’o.
