Felicity Huffman felt like she was “the ugliest one” on the set of Desperate Housewives, according to the show’s creator.

Huffman is facing up to 30 days in federal prison and a fine of $20,000 (£16,300) after she pleaded guilty to attempting to rig a college entrance exam to help her eldest child win a place at an elite university, and admitted to paying thousands to have someone illegally correct her daughter’s test answers.

Close friends and family members have written to the judge presiding over the case to show their support for the star, and in his statement, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry opened up about Huffman’s “generosity and kindness”.

In the note, obtained by Entertainment Tonight, he recalled one time Huffman felt insecure while surrounded by her co-stars Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, and Nicollette Sheridan.

“When our show was picked up, we flew the cast to a press event in NY (New York). Felicity and her cast members were swarmed by photographers,” he wrote. “Every woman was dolled up to the nines and for the first time, Felicity started to feel insecure about her appearance.”

Cherry explained that the other “actresses had all been models before they’d been actresses” or had previously played “sexy vamps”, and “Felicity was the only one who hadn’t”.

“After the event feeling self-conscious, Felicity called her husband, character actor William H. Macy, and said to him somewhat tearfully, ‘I feel like the ugliest one in the room.’ Bill’s response? ‘I always feel like I’m the ugliest one in the room,'” he continued.

“He made Felicity laugh and see the ridiculousness of her insecurity. She told me, ‘That’s the last time I ever worried about comparing myself to my costars’.”

The star is hoping that the impressive number of character references will support her request for a year of probation, in lieu of the month of jail time prosecutors are asking for.
