Emmy Rossum thanked viewers for supporting Shameless as she said goodbye to the TV show on Sunday night (10Mar19).
The Phantom of the Opera actress announced in August (18) that she would be leaving the comedy-drama after eight years, and her character Fiona Gallagher bowed out during the series nine midseason finale on Sunday.
Taking to Twitter after her final episode aired, Emmy thanked her fans for supporting the show.
“Tonight, on my last evening as Fiona, I want to express my gratitude and love for the Shameless family and our faithful audience. It’s been an honour and privilege to be your Fiona (heart emoji),” she tweeted.
Before the show was broadcast, Emmy shared a throwback picture from her first appearance as Fiona on Instagram.
“Final episode tonight. Here is a picture taken eight years ago during our pilot. Today, 110 episodes later, I am filled with gratitude for my shameless family and for our faithful audience. I’ll be watching with love and can’t wait to see what comes next,” she wrote in the caption.
The 32-year-old didn’t explain her reasons for leaving when she announced it in September but told fans that “the last eight years have been the best of my life” and “try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”
Her departure comes around two years after she demanded to be given the same pay as co-star William H. Macy in order for her to return for season eight.
Fiona’s story concludes with her finally leaving the South Side of Chicago and embarking on a new life, and her co-star recently told Variety that he hopes she will return in a guest capacity before the show concludes.
“I think Emmy will come back and make a guest appearance before this thing sets sail. She better, otherwise I’m gonna grab her by the ear and bring her back,” he joked.
