Cameron Diaz has recalled how she was feeling “a little crazy” on the day she decided to cut her hair short.
The Hollywood actress has appeared on the cover of U.S. InStyle magazine four times over the years, and in a new interview to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication, she candidly revealed she was going through a turbulent time in her personal life when shooting for one of the issues.
For her May 2012 cover and accompanying feature, Diaz can be seen posing in a number of haute couture designer gowns in Paris, with her blonde hair styled into a short, shaggy bob.
“I was probably a little crazy at the time too which was why I wanted to cut all my hair off,” she remembered, before adding that she didn’t care how people would react. “I’m not trying to fit into anyone’s box about how I should be. I just fit in my own box.”
And looking back on her InStyle cover from six years ago, the Bad Teacher star explained that her hair transformation could have really been about her needing a change in her life.
“You know when you’re going through those periods of time when you’re like, ‘I’m gonna get bangs,’ you know what bangs mean right… just like a lot of emotions. Or when you have to cut off all of your hair because you’re just like, ‘I’m starting over!'” the 46-year-old said.
Shortly after cutting off her hair, Diaz wrote The Body Book, followed three years later by The Longevity Book, in which she discusses how to age gracefully.
While taking a break from the film business, the star wed Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden in 2015, with her last movie appearance being in the Annie remake back in 2014.
However, she hinted that she might return to acting one day, but only if the project “feels effortless.”
