Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian has resigned as a Reddit boardmember and called on officials to fill his seat with a black candidate to help “curb racial hate”.
The tech mogul, who co-founded the social news aggregation site, announced the move in an impassioned statement on Friday, revealing he wanted to do more to support the black community in honour of Alexis Olympia, the two-year-old daughter he shares with tennis icon Williams, who is black.
“I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate,” Ohanian shared.
“It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?'”
Ohanian, who was estimated to have a net worth of $70 million (£55 million) in a Forbes magazine article last year (19), went on to explain he will be using “future gains” from his shares in Reddit to “serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate”, starting with a $1 million (£800,000) donation to the Know Your Rights Camp Legal Defense Initiative set up by former American footballer Colin Kaepernick to fight police brutality.
“I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now,” he continued, before sending a message of support to Black Lives Matter protesters. “To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop.”
Activists have been taking to the streets and making renewed calls for an end to social and racial injustice for over a week in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who lost his life at the hands of a white police officer in Minnesota on 25 May.
