It’s been a wild few months for Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi. Zozi had an emotional reunion with her family when she returned to her hometown at the weekend. An emotional Tunzi praised her maternal grandmother, Cynthia Lawukazi Nodopu from Dayimane village in Dutywa, for giving her her first book and bestowing upon her a love of reading. She also met Nelson Mandela’s grandson Ndaba Mandela and visited the Walter Sisulu in Mthatha where thousands turned out to meet her.

“The support of my family has been crucial to my success,” she said. “My mother has taught me the importance of remaining kind and humble and always being helpful to those around me. My father has taught me the importance of an education, hard work and discipline. Most important they have equally moulded me to be who I am today,” she said, adding that she was looking forward to eating her mother’s umngqusho.

Zozi was also honoured with a mural painted on a library wall in the reigning queen’s home town of Tsolo, and in prominent public view, is the pastoral scene of Tunzi in full traditional dress and surrounded by young people. Artist Lwando Hlazo and his sister Azola Ntlantsana dreamed up the idea of immortalising Zozibini in the area where she grew up. They were joined in the project by artist Aphethuxolo Sibariboyi.

At the unveiling, Tunzi thanked the team, pointing to their depiction of her saying: “They got me. That painting is beautiful and I love that they put me in traditional garb – a brightly coloured Xhosa bead necklace and a beaded headscarf. It’s relatable to everyone who lives here and I can carry this image with me wherever I am in the world.”
