Celebrities remember Miriam Makeba 10 years after her death
The 9th of November marks 10 years since legendary singer, Mam’ Miriam Makeba passed away after a fatal heart attack claimed her life
A decade later, her legacy remains as strong as it’s ever been.
Such anniversaries are always bittersweet. On the one hand, the day is always a painful reminder that one of our beloved stars is no more. But there can be no denying that, with every year that passes since that fateful day in 2008, the overwhelming respect with which Miriam was held is still alive and well today.
After all, uMam’ Miriam was more than just a musician
She was an iconic struggle icon who used her voice and her platform to speak out against an oppressive government. Even when she was exiled and villified as an enemy of the State, she continued to make music and speak on the matters that made the biggest difference to the lives of everyday South Africans.
But that takes nothing away from her musical legacy. Miriam is widely hailed as one of the most influential stars of ANY musical generation (in any country!) and her work has inspired many of our own singers to pursue their dreams. It came as no surprise that some of South Africa’s biggest celebrities took a moment to pay their respects to the late singer, 10 years on from the day she died.
Singer, Simphiwe Dana led the way with an early-morning tribute in which she hailed Makeba’s talents as an iconic artist and struggle hero

On this day 10 years ago, South Africa lost a world class icon. The biggest and most impactful talent our wounded country has ever produced. I hope you’re having a well deserved rest, Mazi. And that your every whim is attended to by the angels. Thank you for your selfless duty to our beloved continent, always putting our people first even to your own detriment. And thank you for your fashion sense, it continues to inspire through generations. #MiriamMakeba #MamaAfrica #AlutaContinua
Members of the media, who at some point had the privilege of covering Makheba’s successful career, also took a moment to pay their respects. Entertainment journalist, Phil Mphela and TV legend, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle also shared tributes on the 9th of November.
