We Can’t wait For Project Runway South Africa. Here’s Why…

by Monde Mtyolo

Everyone with even the slightest inclination towards fashion has been obsessed with Project Runway since Season 1 was launched in the US about 13 years ago. We have seen fashion careers started on the show blossom and longed for a local version of the hit franchise.

Now, Ndalo Media and Mzansi Magic, with sponsors Lexus, TRESemmé and 4th Street wine, came together to make South Africans fashion designers dreams a reality.

On Friday night, May 4, Project Runway SA announced who their resident judges would be: Noni Gasa and Rahim Rawjee!

Noni Gasa comes with a wealth of TV experience from co-hosting a string of television productions like, Big Brother Africa, Media Matters, The M-Net Movies Show, and starring as a judge on Mzansi Magic’s reality model search, Diamond In The Ruff.

Rahim Rawjee runs a highly sought after Masterclasses in which he shares his secrets and teaches about the finer aspects of creating impeccably crafted garments. We see why Obama (yes, former President Barack Obama) chooses to wear his designer suits. Heads up: We think he’ll be the mean judge, the Zac Posen of the show 😉

Sticking to the international format of the show, our local Tim Gunn (mentor role) will be South Africa’s darling designer-to-the-stars, award-winning Gert-Johan Coetzee. The mentor will be playing a substantial role in Project Runway SA as the show’s golden key to unlocking greater depths of creativity within each contestant, as they compete for their big break into the fashion industry. Amidst the inevitable drama and panic that comes with intense challenges, Coetzee will be the calm eye of the storm for the contestants, keeping them on deadline, guiding them on their designs and fabric choices, steering them towards the finishing line, greatness and the ultimate expression of their own voices.

We got to meet all 12 of the designers and the show promises to be a must-see. It is scheduled to air in July 2018. Stay tuned for everything fashion from Mzanzi’s next generation of designers!
