AKA is back! Just as we get ready for the weekend, the rapper surprised fans by dropping two brand-new singles as we ease into the holiday season. The star premiered ‘Main Ous’ with Youngsta CPT as well as ‘F.R.E.E.’ with Riky Rick and Durban’s finest DJ Tira. Both tracks are distinctly different but, as we’ve come to expect from AKA, both tracks are fire.
‘F.R.E.E’ blends Amapiano, house, hip-hop and kwaito together and AKA confidently confesses this to be one of his favourite songs that he’s ever made because of the blending of genres. “I’m the only artist in South Africa that can mix genres and make it sound so good,” the star tells us.
AKA’s second single features the highly anticipated collaboration with Cape Town’s prolific MC, YoungstaCPT, on the track titled Main Ou’s. “This is a record for the streets and the culture. A real Hip Hop record,” expresses AKA.
Unpacking Main Ou’s and his collaboration with AKA, YoungstaCPT shares: “The title of the song is like a proverb for coloured people. Being the main ou means being ‘the dik ding’ the big guy, the boss man, the top of the food chain but also the fact it’s a mixture between the English and Afrikaans slang makes it more powerful as a name. It’s exactly what AKA calls himself, it’s Super Mega!”
He adds that “For us to be joining forces after all this time shows that the relationship was established before the music was made. It should encourage more collaborations within the coloured community among artists but also across cities and backgrounds regardless of age or colour. The song gives you the feeling of breaking rules and surviving by any means necessary.”
Both ‘Main Ous’ and ‘F.R.E.E’ are now available to download or stream on your favourite digital music platform.
