CLOSE on the heels of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, Idris Elba made history on Saturday night when he took home two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The British actor earned himself the coveted statuette for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Beasts Of No Nation and Best Actor in a Limited Series for Luther, making him the first black person to win a double at the SAG Awards.
And it seems Idris’ victory wasn’t the only win of note. Queen Latifah won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for her role as Bessie Smith in Bessie. Viola Davis won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role as Annalise Keating in How To Get Away With Murder and Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role as Suzanne in Orange Is The New Black.

The SAG Awards is said to be the first real indicator of success at the Academy Awards, which is somewhat ironic, since this year’s Academy Awards is plagued by racial issues. In fact, the Academy Association has been slammed by numerous industry entertainers for not having nominated any black actors this year.

The SAG union, unlike the Golden Globes (which is represented by 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) has a diverse membership consisting of over 160 000 members like film and television performers, radio personalities, stunt actors, journalists, etc.
