It was on the second season of Skeem Saam that Amanda Manku began to win the hearts of the soapie’s viewers playing the character of Elizabeth Thobakgale – a sweet, yet stubborn school girl. Three seasons later, Amanda continues to grow in her role and is now exploring other avenues in the industry. We sat down with her to chat about her acting career, plans for the future and the words she lives by.
Amanda versus Elizabeth
I’m in-between being an extrovert and an introvert in the sense that when I’m around people that I’m used to, I can engage. I can also engage with people I don’t know that much. I’m very chilled, I think the one thing we have in common is the fact that we’re both go-getters.
I fell in love with acting when I was in primary school.
When I was in primary school we had people from Love Life come to our school. They encouraged us to stay away from gangs and drugs. They did acting classes for about two to three weeks. I loved the concept of doing acting to have a voice. I wanted to be someone who can make a difference in someone’s life.
After matric I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do.
I always wanted to do media but my parents were worried. I somehow manipulated the situation and took a gap year. In my gap year I did a learnership with SABC education. During that time I realised that it was what I wanted to do. After the internship I went to study for it. I majored in film editing, that’s where I got my BA. It was in 2013.
After I graduated, Skeem Saam season 1 had just finished. They had open auditions for Season Two for a character called Masego, I auditioned and didn’t get that character. I got called back again for a character of Kamo and also didn’t get it. A year later they called me in for the character of Elizabeth which I’m currently playing. I was ecstatic.
2016 Has Taught Me
To invest more time in my family. Sometime we don’t really see this. You just wake up in the morning and just go about with your business. You see your family and you don’t spend time with them. I love my family to the core and I realised that I wasn’t spending time with them.
Plans For 2017
2017 is really all about personal growth for me. I want to grow in the jobs I already have at SuperSport as well as in acting.
