Michelle Obama – Belgian Waffles & Chocolate Sauce
The former FLOTUS was well known for heading a campaign for healthy eating and lifestyles, but now that she has recently stepped down from her position and is able to take some well-deserved time out, we pretty sure she’s finding the time to indulge in one of her favourite desserts, Belgian waffles & chocolate sauce.
One and a half teaspoons of active dry yeast
One cup of warm water
Three cups of all-purpose flour
Half a teaspoon of salt
One cup of whole milk
110g of unsalted butter (melted)
Two large eggs (separated)
Half a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
Icing sugar (for dusting)
Preheat your oven to 225° C. Dissolve the yeast in the water in a small bowl, and in a large one, stir the flour with the salt. Then whisk in the yeast mixture, milk, butter, egg yolks and vanilla until smooth. In a medium bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, and fold them into the batter and let stand for 20 minutes. Heat and grease a waffle iron, and pour one and a quarter cups of the batter into the iron and cook until the waffles are golden (around six minutes); then transfer the waffles to the oven. Repeat with the remaining batter.
Chocolate Sauce Ingredients
One cup of cream
280g of good quality chocolate (chopped)
Two tablespoons icing sugar
In a saucepan, bring the cream to a boil; then remove from the heat and add the chocolate. Let stand for two minutes and then stir until the chocolate is melted. Finally, add the icing sugar and whisk until smooth. Dust the waffles with sugar, drizzle with the chocolate sauce, and serve.
