Ed Sheeran Drops Two Brand New Singles
2017 has started off with a bang! British singer Ed Sheeran has made his much-anticipated comeback today as he dropped not one, but two brand new singles. On the 13th of December 2015, Ed announced that he will be taking a hiatus and exactly a year to the date, the singer revealed that his third studio album ‘Divide’ drops early this year. Now, the singer released ‘Castle On The Hill’ and ‘Shape of You’ as the lead singles off the project.
What’s interesting about the release, other than the fact that the singer has chosen two lead singles, is how different the songs sound sonically. “Castle On The Hill”, written by Ed and Benny Blanco (also on production), pays homage to growing up in Framingham, Suffolk. The song is beautiful pop/rock anthem which showcases Ed’s massive vocal as he pushes it harder than ever before. The song is the comeback single we were hoping to hear from the crooner. It’s incredibly strong lyrically and, again, gives us more depth into who Ed is as an artist and person. “Shape Of You”, written by Ed, Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac (also on production) sees Ed giving his take on the current state of pop music. The song is filled with tropical beats and is the more commercial track of the two. The production is incredible and Ed delivers another strong lyrical and vocal performance. The song proves the star has been doing a lot of experimentation during his hiatus and is willing to step outside of his comfort zone while staying true to his artistry. The singer blends melodic harmonies with rap which was incredibly popular on his previous album ‘X’ and is the single we believe radio stations around the world will eat up.
The different approaches Ed took musically on Divide’s lead singles prove that he has something exciting to share with us on the record, which is due for release around in March or April, and the fact that he has taken a different approach to the singles’ release could mean that he has something unconventional planned for the album as well. Ed is an incredibly artistic guy and I’m very excited to hear what he comes up with on the new album. Welcome back, Ed. We’ve missed you.
