Meet The Judges For SA’s Diageo Bartender Of The Year
WE’VE found the crème de la crème of South Africa’s mixologists – but, as always, there can be only one, and our 10 stars now have to up their game for some of the biggest names in the business if they want to come out on top to become the South African Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year – they’ve got to show that they know how to find and perfect cocktail, showing finesse and good taste. The judging panel comprises renowned mixologist Dominic Walsh, Lorna Maseko and Chef David Higgs.
Dominic Walsh is an enthusiastic bartender who has competed on an international level on numerous occasions representing South Africa. He has participated in the Angostura Global Cocktail Championships in Trinidad, placing fourth globally. He represented SA in Mexico for the Tahona Society global finals and has also been a contender in the Diageo World Class Global Bartender Finals.
Lorna Maseko, of course, is a presenter on SABC 3’s Top Billing. She is also a producer of an entertainment programme called Afro Showbiz News and has produced the current affairs magazine breakfast show The Weekender on SABC News International.
Chef David Higgs has experience in the hospitality industry that stretches over 25 years. He is a wine enthusiast and investor. He also believes in investing in young people by opening a number of restaurants across SA to train youngsters in hospitality. “Learning to work with students is a new challenge but very rewarding,” he says.
This competition is one of the world’s most prestigious bartending competitions around the world. Preliminary stages of the competition saw hundreds of hungry (or should we say thirsty?) bartenders from across the country take part in the vigorous and extensive challenges. Only 10 are left. The winner of the South African leg will compete in World Class Global Championships in Mexico later this year.
