Happy Birthday, AB de Villiers!
He is regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time and a legend of the modern game. He is known for his batting, fielding & wicket-keeping prowess! He strikes fear into bowlers as they are terrified that he will launch into their bowling and smack them all over the ground. He is a massive talent and when he puts on that green and gold Proteas kit he adds something extra special to the team. AB has scored plenty runs against all the World’s teams – no one has been spared!
AB de Villiers celebrates his 33rd birthday today. He created history at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg where he ripped through the West Indies’ bowling attack and scored a huge record-breaking 100 against the West Indies on 18 January 2015 as the Proteas cruised to their highest-ever total of 439 runs and a 148-run victory! It was a PinkDrive match and what a special day it was as records were broken on and off the field both with the Proteas’ run-scoring and the R600 000 earned for PinkDrive in aid of breast cancer awareness.
AB de Villiers broke a few records that day. He got to 50 runs off just 16 balls. He then scored the fastest century in ODIs, off just 31 balls! De Villiers’ tonne was the third hundred in the massive South African total – the first time three South African batsmen scored a hundred in a single ODI innings. Rilee Rossouw had earlier scored his maiden century and Hashim Amla scored his 18th hundred. Rossouw and Amla created the highest opening partnership that South Africa has ever posted – 247 runs.
In less than an hour, AB de Villiers took an innings which was building healthily and well and turned it into a skyscraper of an innings. He smashed 16 sixes, the most by a South African and the joint-highest number of sixes worldwide in an ODI innings, and dominated the 192-run second-wicket stand with Hashim Amla which lasted just 67 deliveries. Amla only faced 30 balls and scored 33 runs. De Villiers scored a total of 149 runs off 44 balls!
That match is one of the many highlights of AB de Villiers’ illustrious career! Hopefully there will still be many more to come in this cricketing hero’s career!
Happy Birthday AB! #peoplelovesyou
