After Duroy spends years of service in the military, a chance meeting with former brother-in-arms Forestier launches him upon a new path as a journalist for a middle-class French paper.

It also gives him access to the city's most influential and wealthy wives.As he rises through the ranks and his power begins to grow, Duroy manipulates the women, including Forestier's own wife, Forestier family friend Clotilde de Marelle and elder doyenne Madame Walter to achieve his own goals. But a life such as his cannot be without its bumps, as he is shortly to find out. Rating: 3 Stars
